Chinese Herbs

There is nothing magical about Chinese herbs. The Chinese use a holistic approach to medicine and it is not considered alternative medicine.   In China, natural health typically utilizes herbs before trying the Western approach.    In fact, the Chinese use many of the same plants that we use in the West.  The Chinese use medicinal herbs, which like Western medicinal herbs,  act as diuretics, alteratives, laxatives, tonics, adaptogenic, expectorants and so forth.  What makes Chinese herbalism so powerful is its philosophy -- the way it approaches health and disease.  It is a cohesive, internally-consistent system of natural health care that was developed over 2,500 years of practical experiences.

Chinese medicine is based on the five elements: wood (hepatic or liver), fire (circulatory system), air (respiratory system), earth (digestive system) and water (urinary system).  Each of the elements are intertwined with the other elements and Chinese herbs are combined to support the secondary systems as well as the primary system.

Nature's Sunshine Products has several excellent Chinese Herbal Combinations:

Anti-Gas, Chinese [Digestive, Intestinal] is a Chinese formula combining 15 herbs. It is considered “earth-reducing” in Chinese herbology. Its Chinese name xiao dao can be translated as “clear the congestion.” Anti-Gas supports both the digestive and detoxifying functions of the body, including the urinary system.

Blood Build Chinese [Circulatory] is a Chinese combination of 18 herbsdesigned to nutritionally support the blood, liver, glands and general circulation. The Chinese call this formula bu xue, which translates as “to nurture the blood.” It is designed to strengthen a weakened wood (liver) constitution. This formula may improve blood quality and purity and help strengthen the immune system.

Cordyceps [Circulatory, Immune, Respiratory, Glandular] is perhaps best known as the supplement that members of the Chinese women’s track and field team used in training before they broke several records in 1993 and 1994. Team members tested negative for using illegal substances, and their coach revealed that the athletes’ diets were supplemented with a Chinese “caterpillar fungus.” Fungi supplements—like reishi and shiitake mushrooms—are growing in popularity in the U.S. Another important species, Cordyceps sinensis, is also gaining recognition. Cordyceps has properties similar to those of ginseng and is traditionally used to help the body build strength and endurance. In traditional Chinese medicine, cordyceps has been used to benefit the glandular system in both women and men. In addition, cordyceps supports the kidneys, aids the upper respiratory tract and helps the body maintain proper blood viscosity.

HY-C, Chinese [Glandular] is a combination of 16 herbs that nutritionally support the glandular system and associated metabolic processes. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the HY-C formula is called bu yin, which means to “supplement yin.” In this case, yin is considered moisture.  These herbs work to support the body as it attempts to reduce fire and strengthen water (support associated organs and maintain normal metabolic processes).

IF-C, Chinese [Structural, Immune] is a combination of 18 herbs designed to support joint health and immunity and calm a stressed fire constitution. Its Chinese name qing re can be translated as “clear the heat.” These herbs nourish the structural and immune systems by stimulating blood flow and eliminating toxins through a variety of actions. Its primary herbs—schizonepeta, lonicera and forsythia—promote the removal of toxins and may help improve an overall feeling of well-being.

KB-C, Chinese [Structural, Urinary] is a combination of herbs used for kidney and bone support. Its Chinese name jian gu can be translated to mean “strengthen the bones.” KB-C is designed to strengthen the water element. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is used to nourish the kidneys and nutritionally support the urinary and structural systems, eliminating water and providing extra joint support.

Kidney Activator, Chinese [Urinary] is a Chinese combination of 14 herbs designed to support the urinary and lymphatic systems. Kidney Activator is called qu shi, which can be translated as “to get rid of dampness.” In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is said to promote kidney function and to help clear retained water from the body, which may positively affect joints. Its primary herbs include morus, areca, hoelen, alisma and astragalus.

Liver Balance, Chinese [Digestive, Nervous, Hepatic] is a Chinese combination of 12 herbs designed to support the needs of a stressed wood constitution. The Chinese call this formula tiao he, which can be translated to mean “harmonizing.”  In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is used to support both the digestive and nervous systems, optimizing liver health and reducing stress. Its primary herbs—scute, peony, bupleurum and atractylodes—have been used traditionally to maintain normal nervous system function during mental stress and support the upper digestive system during tension and distress.

Lung Support, Chinese [Respiratory] is a Chinese combination of 16 herbs specially formulated to supplement the needs of a weakened metal constitution. The Chinese call this formula fu lei, which can be translated to mean “strengthen the weak and thin.”  Lung Support is considered a lung tonic formula. Its primary herbs— anemarrhena, aster, bupleurum and astragalus—have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to boost the immune system, build energy and support the respiratory system.

Mineral-Chi Tonic, Chinese [Vital Nutrition, Glandular] is a special blend of tonic herbs and a full spectrum of naturally chelated trace minerals extracted from the plant vegetation of an ancient seabed.

Mood Elevator, Chinese [Nervous] is composed of 17 herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a “fire enhancing” combination to regulate and untrap the chi (vitality). Its two key ingredients, bupleurum root and cyperus rhizome, may support the liver, the organ (according to Chinese philosophy) that plays an integral role in mood. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, when the liver is functioning at its peak, positive mood may be maintained. Its Chinese name jie yu can be translated to mean “relieve depression.”

Nervous Fatigue Formula, Chinese [Circulatory] is an herbal combination that Traditional Chinese Medicine would consider a fire-enhancing formula. Its Chinese name yang xin translates to “nurture the heart.” “Weakness” in the fire element usually manifests itself in the digestive, cardiovascular or reproductive system. Nervous Fatigue helps relieve stress and helps support digestion and promote sleep. Its key herbs include zizyphus, biota and schizandra.

Spleen Activator, Chinese [Digestive] is a Chinese combination of 17 herbs that, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, may nutritionally act as a digestive system tonic and provide energy to a tired body. The Chinese call this formula wen zhong, which can be translated to mean “warm the center.” According to TCM, this formula is designed to strengthen a “weak” earth element, nourish spleen function and support the pancreas. It may help provide relief from occasional nighttime leg cramps. Its primary herbs—ginseng, licorice and atractylodes—may help to provide energy and strengthen the digestive system.

Stress Relief, Chinese [Nervous] is a combination of 14 herbs and natural substances used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to support emotional balance and calm a stressed fire constitution. The Chinese call this formula an shen, which can be translated to mean “to pacify the spirit.” These herbs may help tonourish the nervous system and subsequently help improve gastric function and strengthen the urinary system. Its primary nutrients—polygonatum, oyster shell, haliotis shell and fushen—may help support both mental function and the cardiovascular system.

Trigger Immune®, Chinese [Immune] is a combination of 18 herbs designed to support natural immunity. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this formula is designed to strengthen a weakened energy constitution. Its Chinese name sheng mai can be translated to mean “generate the pulse.” Trigger Immune is considered a general tonic formula. Its key herbs—schizandra, astragalus, dang gui, ginseng and ganoderma—build the immune system and promote energy.

VS-C®, Chinese [Immune]. This immune-supporting formula is a combination that Chinese herbalists would describe as a “metal-enhancing” formula. These herbs create a favorable environment for microbial balance and overall health, support detoxification and promote a healthy respiratory tract. Originally developed by Dr. Wenwei Xie, VS-C is exclusive to Nature’s Sunshine.
